Y2K Aesthetic
Glossy gels, metallic gradients, and unabashed techno-optimism.
The Concept
Before the rise of flat design, the web was dominated by the desire to make digital objects look impossibly shiny and tactile. The Y2K and early Frutiger Aero aesthetics represented an era of profound techno-optimism—characterized by aqua gels, brushed metals, and highly detailed icon design.
The Experiment
We designed a fictional early-2000s media player interface (N-AMP). It leans heavily into the visual language of the era, discarding modern minimalism in favor of complex CSS gradients, inset shadows, pixel fonts, and high-gloss UI elements.
Design Decisions
Gel Buttons
Recreating the iconic "Aqua" button style using layered CSS box-shadows (inset white on top, dark on bottom) and pill-shaped borders to simulate physical, glossy resin.
Metallic Gradients
Utilizing multi-stop linear gradients to simulate brushed aluminum and liquid metal surfaces, a staple of early 2000s software dashboards.
System Fonts
Abandoning modern web-fonts in favor of classic system typefaces like Tahoma, Trebuchet MS, and unaliased pixel fonts to authentically match the rendering constraints of the era.

The Art vs. Access Tradeoff
The Conflict: Frutiger Aero and Y2K rely on rapidly scrolling <marquee> tags, non-semantic window layering, pixelated bitmap fonts, and aggressive color saturation.
The Compromise: The <marquee> tag is deprecated and inaccessible; it must be rebuilt using CSS animations that pause on focus or hover. Draggable windows must have keyboard equivalents for closing and focusing.
